Our building at the former
   Fort Devens in central
   Massachusetts was once an
   Army Hospital. It was
   abandoned until we purchased
it in 2000. We’ve been lovingly
restoring it ever since. Most of
   Devens today consists of over
   4000 rolling acres and restored
   homes and industrial buildings.
It is a gem of a restoration.

What is Eglomisé?

Eglomisé painting was popularized in the 18th century in France and was named after the artisan who developed the technique of applying and blending paint directly on the reverse side of glass. The French eglomisé paintings were exquisite and characterized by gilt ornamentation that brings to mind royalty, palaces, and opulence. The English reverse-glass paintings that followed were not as ornate but were quite sophisticated. Many clocks and mirrors were decorated with these elegant paintings and one can find them in museums throughout Europe.

By mid-20th century eglomisé painting had faded into obscurity and was relatively unknown. In 1965 Eglomisé Designs, Inc. began a business of creating reverse-glass paintings of various subjects such as flowers, fruits, ships, etc. They were simple, charming and began to appear in better retail stores nationally. Today these early decorative subjects are appearing in antique shops at startling prices.

By 1970, Eglomisé Designs, Inc.® was offering historic views of several hundred American colleges and the academic niche became its forté. Today its library stocks thousands of college scenes, perhaps the most extensive collection of historic college memorabilia in the United States. This unique art is still very much alive today. However, since 2004 each scene is now a fine Colorprint derived from an original painting. One of the greatest advantages of the Colorprints is that personalization can now be added, a service not available in the paintings.
